AO MĀLAMALAMA is an exhibition that centers and celebrates motherhood — an acknowledgment of the power of maternal lineage. Rooted in the idea of nurturing light, the exhibition looks to motherhood not only as identity, but as an active, generational practice of care, knowledge, and responsibility.

Juanita Kaʻāhanui’s work, create in honor of her three sons, frames motherhood as a lifelong kuleana, where light is cultivated through presence, meditation, and inherited ʻike.

Mitchell Anderson’s painting reflects this same lineage through the everyday, honoring women’s labor as a living foundation for family, memory, and place.

Together, Kaʻahanui and Anderson offer a reflection on how culture is sustained through the quiet continuity of maternal care, reminding us that our brightest futures are rooted in those who came before us to nurture our light.
