"Coming Home" by Mitchell Anderson

"This painting comes from direct observation and my sketchbooks and is part of my ongoing effort to understand my place in Hawaiʻi by paying attention to everyday moments. I was immediately drawn to three women sitting together on a handmade quilt. Through conversation I learned they were cousins and that the quilt had been made by their grandmother. That detail stayed with me. Although the ocean stretches wide behind them, the painting centers on something quieter and closer. Rest, kinship, and inherited care. Growing up with a grandmother and aunties who quilted, I began to think about what it means to rest on what our elders made. In this painting, the quilt becomes a form of lineage and memory, a place where time, family, and land come together. It reflects how culture is carried through shared presence and small moments that root us to place."
